General Questions

What is “Free World Dialup”?

Today’s Free World Dialup is the third generation of Free World Dialup services to offer the ability to make free calls over the Internet. The first Free World Dialup service began in 1995.

Today’s Free World Dialup offers broadband users (cable, dsl, etnernet, satellite, etc.) the ability to join a community of Free World Dialup users who are interested in talking with other members of the worldwide members of the Free World Dialup community.

Members of the Free World Dialup community can call one-another directly and the call will never go through the PSTN. It would be 100% over the Internet. Is there anything to buy? Yes, a one-time purchase of a Free World Dialup supported SIP device is required to be a member of the Free World Dialup community. Currently both the Cisco ATA-186 and the Cisco 7960 (with SIP image) are supported products. We are currently testing alternatives to the Cisco devices including a range of softphones.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

When will the service begin?

The FWD Network is now live. It went live on November 11, 2002.

Please tell your friends and family members to signup for the newsletter as well so that they too can benefit from Free World Dialup.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Where is it available?

Free World Dialup is only available in cities where broadband access is available. Free World Dialup grows…by you and your friends becoming members! What is Broadband?

If you connect to the Internet with a DSL or Cable modem, you have broadband. A broadband connection is when you connect to the Internet at a speed greater then 64k (without bonding) while never utilizing the voice channels of your phone line.

If you use a 28.8, 33.6 or 56k modem, then you do “not” have broadband Internet access and can not be a member of Free World Dialup.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

I have a dialup modem, can I use Free World Dialup?

No, you must have broadband service(DSL, Cable, Ethernet, etc.).

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Can I call people on their cell phones or traditional home phones?

No, Free World Dialup does not provide access to the traditional telephone networks or cellular networks. FWD members can only call other FWD members.

RETURN TO QUESTIO NS

Who will benefit from Free World Dialup’s service?

Anyone with a broadband Internet connection and believes in the spirit which the Internet was founded.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Is it “really” free?

Yes, Free World Dialup is free! There are “no” monthly subscription fees, or per minute charges for calls. The only costs associated with the service are:
  • To become a member, you must purchase an approved SIP User agent. The Cisco ATA-186 which has been tested with our software costs about US$ 175. We do not sell these devices.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Will there be customer support for your free service?

Yes, customer support will be via an Internet listserv. Once again, the community will support the community.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Do I need a PC to use Free World Dialup?

NO!!! You will need a broadband connection and a dedicated SIP user agent such as the ATA-186. No PC is necessary to utilize the service...but we will do support SJphone and will be supporting additional softphones in the future.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Does Free World Dialup work on a Mac?

This is not a PC-to-Phone service! You do not need a Mac or a PC to become a member of the Free World Dialup community. You need a broadband internet connection. No Mac or PC is necessary.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Can I be a wholesale agent or representative for Free World Dialup?

No. Free World Dialup is a members community that has no agents or representatives. It is a members community. If anyone is found abusing Free World Dialup services they will be instantly removed from the community.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Is this a PC to Phone or Phone-to-Phone Service?

No! We are not a PC-to-Phone service! We are not a Phone-to-Phone service! Free World Dialup is a peer-to-peer Internet telephony network that allows members of the community to call each other's dedicated IP phones. With FWD, you can only call other FWD members.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

How do I make a call on Free World Dialup?

Once connected to the Free World Dialup service, you pick up the telephone connected to the Free World Dialup and dial the number you are calling. After you have typed in the number, press “#” and your call will be routed over the Free World Dialup network.

    Note, there are:
  • No access numbers
  • No two stage dialing
  • No pin numbers
  • No calling cards
RETURN TO QUESTIONS

When is the best time of day to make a FWD call?

The FWD community changes constantly throughout the day. Due to different time and date zones around the world, as well as, the individualization of accessibility for each node, there is no best time to call.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Do I have to keep my DSL/Cable modem on for the service to work?

Yes! For the service to work, you must leave your DSL/cable Internet service on during the hours you have set for other members to access your local node .

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Can I surf the Internet while the FWD node is being utilized for phone calls?

Yes, but if you do not have a large (600 kbs or greater) Internet connection, your surfing might degrade the audio quality of the phone call.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Where can I find more information about FWD?

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

How do I go through a NAT?

Normally, if your SIP Telephone supports "STUN", When using NAT (Network Address Translation), both the SIP telephone and NAT sometimes need to be configured. We have deployed a solution from Jasomi Networks that helps FWD users traverse NATs and Firewalls but if you SIP Telephone supports STUN like the Cisco 7960 and Cisco ATA-186 does, it is much preferred if you take the time to enable port forwarding thru your NAT to your SIP Telephone.

Many NAT products have a web based configuration tool.

For example, on the Linksys NAT, Packet forwarding shows up under the advanced tab on setup.

The key with getting the NAT problem solved on the ATA-186 is to forward the SIP port: 5060 to the IP address assigned to the IP phone and then to forward the media port range 16384 to 16391 to the IP address assigned to the IP Phone. The Cisco 7960 requires the media port range of 16384 to 32768 to be fowarded to the IP Phone.

We recommend that members of the FWD Community consider using SIP Friendly firewalls such as the products of InterTex and Ingate.

Cisco ATA-186 NAT Notes: For the ATA 186, if you are using ATA firmware version below 2.14, set the NATIP field to the NAT device's public IP address, disable DHCP and set the StaticIP, StaticRoute, and StaticNetMask fields for your private network's values. The NAT device must be configured to forward the SIPPort and a range of 8 ports starting at MediaPort.

If you are using ATA firmware version 2.14 or above, you are not required to set NATIP. Check out this link: http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/voice/ata/atarn/186rn214.htm for more information regarding release 2.14. In release 2.14, you may leave the NAT IP address at the default value of "0" or "0.0.0.0" and let the ATA automatically scan the Via header for a "received=" parameter when a message is received. The parameter, if present, would indicate to the Cisco ATA 186 that it is operating behind a firewall.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

I'm still having NAT problems, now what?

Note: If you are using ZoneAlarm you will need to disable it, or at least be able to open up port: 5082.

You can visit the FWD QuickStart Guide and view the configuration for four of the most popular FWD endpoints for somebody who is behind a NAT/Firewall including: Windows Messenger, SJphone, ATA-186, Cisco 7960. Other models most likely will work, but it will be up to the community to report their success with us so we will know for certain.

If you find yourself still having trouble, please email jeff@pulver.com, with the subject: "Need Alternative Proxy Help". Jeff's .NET ID is jeff@pulver.com and he is available to provide limited real-time support.

In your email, please let Jeff know your FWD Number and the kind of client that you are trying to register on the FWD Network.

RETURN TO QUESTIONS

Can I use other SIP phones with Free World Dialup?

Yes. To date we have tested the Cisco 7960, Cisco ATA-186, SNOM 100 and Mitel 5055. Please contact the vendor(s) of other SIP devices and encourage them to contact: fwd-admin@pulver.com to schedule testing of their SIP phones with the FWD network.
