Free World Dialup (FWD) "works" by connecting FWD members who both have Broadband internet access with each other. When you register for FWD, you are assigned a FWD number. Once you register your FWD phone with the FWD Network, you are able to contact all of the other registered FWD members if they are on-line when you are. FWD is a community network of worldwide broadband consumers who call each other using SIP phones. SIP phones come in many shapes and sizes. Some SIP phones are hardware based and others are software based, "Softphones" which run on your PC. One supported hardware device, the Cisco ATA-186 connects to both your broadband internet access and either a regular telephone or a cordless telephone. Another supported hardware phone which has recently become a very popular prop in Hollywood movies and TV shows is the Cisco 7960. With FWD, you get a chance to put the Cisco 7960 to work! Four softphones that have also been tested and are known to work with FWD include both the Windows based X-Lite and X-Pro from Xten Networks, SJphone, Windows Messenger 4.6/4.7 (not MSN 5.0) and the Linux Kphone 3.1. Free World Dialup does not provide access to the traditional telephone networks or cellular networks. FWD members can only call other FWD members. By supporting open standards like SIP, FWD members have the freedom to choose from a variety of products when they join FWD. To date, the FWD team has only certified a few products to work with FWD, but this doesn't mean that other products don't work. Vendors who are interested in having their products "FWD Certified" should contact: Jeff Pulver. For more information, read the latest Free World Dialup Update
