Traditionally, voice circuits have been managed in a manner that allows customers to clearly isolate and detect problems in the network. When we move to packets, the concept of a circuit becomes virtual (if present at all), and the facilities are normally robust enough that isolation of troubles becomes more problematic. This panel discusses the lessons learned from the Internet/data network side of communications, and asks the question: how can it be improved to service voice as an application?



Duane Sword, Vice President, Marketing, Empirix

Duane Sword is responsible for the Strategic Marketing, Product Policy and Outbound Marketing for the suite of Hammer test solutions spanning TDM and VoIP for Empirix. Duane has worked extensively in the telecommunications industry, specifically with manufacturers and service providers of broadband switches and routers in Europe, North America and Japan and has a wide background in international product marketing and business development. He started his career with Agilent/HP in January 1996 and his previous positions include roles as Worldwide Business Development Manager, Europe Business Development Manager and Product Marketing Engineer for the Advanced Networks Division, with emphasis on the R&D protocol test industry for IP/Routing, MPLS, ATM and 3G infrastructure.



Rajeev Tankha, VoIP Product Manager, MetaSolv

Rajeev Tankha is the Market Director, VoIP at MetaSolv Software Inc. In this role Rajeev leads MetaSolv's VoIP product strategy and development of VoIP provisioning solutions and manages the product marketing functions for service activation.



Howard Thaw, COO, Iotum

Dr. Howard H. Thaw is a widely respected and noted Business Information Technology Authority, investment banker, business evolutionist, and serial entrepreneur. Over the past 25 years, he has built, financed, mentored and rescued numerous companies including TCT-Centre for Computer Security; ThunderBYTE, DataSafe and M-Venture Inc. His multi-disciplinary technology and knowledge-based industry expertise in developing anti-virus, encryption, backup and other enterprise software have been applied to building successful companies and meeting the major challenges for businesses in keeping up with rapid changes in technology. Howard is currently COO of Iotum Corporation, a promising startup company that is building innovative new applications that leverage the opportunities created by VoIP.



Jamie Warter, Vice President, Marketing, West Ridge Networks

Jamie Warter leads all the product management, marketing, and business development activities at West Ridge Networks. He brings to the company 20 years of experience in the development and marketing of network and telecommunications systems. Prior to joining West Ridge, he was a founder and Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Brix Networks. Earlier in his career, Jamie has held senior marketing positions at Nortel Networks, Bay Networks, 3Com, Penril Datability Networks, Chipcom, and Digital Equipment Corporation. Jamie has a BS and MEng in Electrical Engineering from Cornell and an MBA from Boston University.
