All three media have very different characteristics and market needs. This indicates some form of traffic shaping is a logical requirement for transporting traffic from one place to another. Add to this the desire to offer classes of services and you have a good indication of the list of requirements. This panel speaks of their experience in implementations.

Eckhart Gouras, Managing Director, KEGO Consulting

Eckhart Gouras has been involved in the IP communications industry since 1996, first as one of the founders of Germany’s first Internet telephony service provider, POPTEL Telecommunications. Following POPTEL’s trade sale in 1999, Eckhart joined OCEN Communications in L.A. as head of business development. In 2001 Eckhart returned to Berlin, Germany, to set up his own consultancy in the field of broadband communications and services. He is currently involved in the launch of a new broadband voice venture in Germany. Prior to his work in the IP communications industry Eckhart worked as a lawyer for the international law firm Coudert Brothers. He is a graduate of NY’s Columbia University and a member of the New York State Bar since 1988.



Roberto Mestriner, CTO, Telsey

Roberto Mestriner, Chief Technology Officer, Telsey Communications, joined Telsey in 1996 as head of the software development division and with his team Mestriner developed a distinct software for Telsey's STBs. In 1998, he was promoted to manage the Communication Systems Business Unit and during this experience he leads the development of a Call Router Device. In 1999, he moved on to head the research and development of the @Link Product family which technology he patents. Mr. Mestriner was nominated Telsey's R&D Manager, a role he maintains until the end of 2002 when he is appointed chief technology officer.



Johannes Riedl, Project Manager, Siemens Communications

Johannes Riedl studied Mathematics and Physics at the LMU in Munich and finished his PhD (Mathematics) in 2001 at the Technical University in Munich. He joined Siemens immediately afterwards in the Systems Engineering department within the former ICN. In the following years he became a leading expert in the area of IP network architecture and network engineering. Today he is working in the Siemens Communications Carrier Development Innovations group, being responsible for a cooperation project between Siemens and Juniper networks, called RESIP (RESilient IP networks).



Duane Sword, Vice President, Marketing, Empirix

Duane Sword is responsible for the Strategic Marketing, Product Policy and Outbound Marketing for the suite of Hammer test solutions spanning TDM and VoIP for Empirix. Duane has worked extensively in the telecommunications industry, specifically with manufacturers and service providers of broadband switches and routers in Europe, North America and Japan and has a wide background in international product marketing and business development. He started his career with Agilent/HP in January 1996 and his previous positions include roles as Worldwide Business Development Manager, Europe Business Development Manager and Product Marketing Engineer for the Advanced Networks Division, with emphasis on the R&D protocol test industry for IP/Routing, MPLS, ATM and 3G infrastructure.



Johan Witters, Solutions & Consultative Marketing, Alcatel

Johan Witters has 15 years of experience in the Telecom world. Prior to joining Alcatel, he received a PhD in Physics from the University of Antwerp and a Post-Doc from the University of Eindhoven. Within Alcatel, Johan worked in the Research Center on QoS topics in ATM and is holder of several patents on ATM policing. Later, he worked on end-to-end solutions and on the convergence of TDM towards softswitches. Currently, Johan works within the IP marketing department where his main focus is on the requirements and impact of triple-play services on the underlying data networks. He also works as a consultant for a large enterprise on VoIP introduction for teleworkers.
