Managing the media requires devices that can support PSTN trunking and Internet interfaces. Included in is the ability to interact with DTFM tones and groom modem traffic and faxes. This panel looks at the requirements for media servers and how they are connected.



Amir Atai, Lead Scientist, Lucent

Dr. Atai is the Lead Scientist in Lucent Convergence Solutions. Prior to the acquisition of Telica by Lucent, Dr. Atai was Telica's Lead Scientist performing research related to the convergence of broadband and the PSTN. Prior to that, he was the Chief Scientist & Executive Director of Network Performance at Telcordia where he consulted on network planning and performance for new/emerging technologies to major carriers. He has been at the forefront of developing generic requirements for SS7, AIN, Internet Offload architecture, DSL, and VoIP. He served as ITESF chairman from 1999-2001. Dr. Atai has published numerous white papers/articles on the impact of Internet traffic on the PSTN and has also proposed packet based architectural solutions. He received both a BSEE and MSEE from the University of Florida and a Ph. D. in EE from Rutgers University.



Alan Bugos, Vice President, Engineer, iBasis

Alan R. Bugos, Vice President of Engineering, iBasis, is responsible for overseeing the engineering design, testing/evaluation, systems integration, and global deployment of iBasis' International Internet telephony network, including interoperability, enhanced VoIP services and applications. Mr. Bugos has more than 14 years of hands-on experience in telecommunications, optical networking, data networking, and communications systems integration and has been involved in VoIP R&D and deployments since 1998. He was the recipient of GTE's highest technical merit award, the Warner Award for Technical Achievement in pioneering DSL data networks in 1997. He has published over 45 technical publications and received BS and MS Engineering degrees from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville.



William Flanagan, VP, Product Marketing, sentitO Networks

William Flanagan brings to sentitO over 10 years of industry experience in designing profitable telecommunications solutions. Prior to joining sentitO, Flanagan was Director of Marketing for Tellabs’ SALIX line of next-generation switching solutions, handling all product marketing, product management and public relations. Previously, Mr. Flanagan served as a Business Development Manager for Ascend Communications. With Ascend, Mr. Flanagan worked with global carriers to define their business requirements and necessary technologies to meet those objectives.

Mr. Flanagan holds a Master’s Degree in information Engineering from the University of Texas, and a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma.



Alan Percy, Director, Business Development, AudioCodes

Mr. Percy is Director of Software Partner Business Development at AudioCodes, a leading provider of Voice over IP technology. Mr. Percy brings over 15 years of experience in the telecommunications, networking and wireless equipment industries. Mr. Percy has had a number of papers published in various telecommunications journals and is a frequent speaker at industry conferences.



Michael Rubin, Director, Product Management, Sonus Networks

As Director, Product Management, Michael Rubin is responsible for the
company's core switching solutions, including the industry leading GSX9000 Open Services Switch.

Mr. Rubin brings to Sonus many years of experience in the networking
industry, in both the local and wide area networking arenas. Mr. Rubin came to Sonus from 3Com Corporation, where he was Product Line Manager for the CoreBuilder 7000 family of Ethernet/ATM switches and Business Line Manager for Corporate WAN Solutions focusing on enterprise networks. Prior to 3Com, Mr. Rubin worked at Motorola, where he managed the OEM relationship with StrataCom (now part of Cisco Systems) for their ATM WAN switches.

Mr. Rubin holds Bachelors and Masters degrees in Computer Science and
Business Administration from Columbia University.



Mike Twomey, VP, Marketing, Excel Switching Corporation

Mike Twomey is the Vice President of Product Planning for Excel Switching Corporation. In this role, Mike is responsible for the product definition, market positioning and product launch of Excel’s Converged Services Platform (CSP).

Mike has worked in the telecommunications industry for 15 years, and has held multiple product and marketing management positions in the telecom arena. Most recently, Mike was the Vice President of Product Marketing and Business Development for Lucent’s Open Network Platforms group.

Mike holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Business Administration Degree from Babson College.
