SUMMARY
The Senior Architect, Signaling Protocols, PacketCable will serve as an individual contributor, advisor, and technical project leader for several vendor focus teams. The individual will also manage small development projects, including internal CableLabs staff liaisons and interactions with member companies and vendors. Position also involves participation in IETF & ITU-T standards activities and presentations on issues of interest to the cable industry.

The Senior Architect will provide technical leadership within the PacketCable project on all areas related to SIP, including conceptual architecture development, requirements determination, project planning, specification writing, test plan development and implementation, and analysis and interpretation of test plan results.


FUNCTIONS

  • Manage one or more vendor teams within the project to develop and extend the use of SIP within the PacketCable specifications in order to meet the architectural objectives of the project. Develop relationships with key vendor and member representatives to assist in meeting these objectives. Manage specification development projects, make written contributions to Technical Reports and Specifications, assist in the management of conference calls, review and assess vendor written contributions, and prepare presentations summarizing technical work.

  • Support the ongoing PacketCable compliance testing program by assisting in the development of test plans and procedures for testing of SIP interfaces. Manage a vendor team within the project to develop software tools and implement test cases for PacketCable Product Testing. Contribute to the test platform software development projects. Develop relationships with key vendor and member representatives to assist in meeting these objectives.

  • Coordinate all developments and extensions with other subject matter experts and project managers within the PacketCable project and among other CableLabs departments.

  • Proactively identify the key areas of existing and emerging technology of interest to PacketCable, and analyze feature, cost, and time to market requirements.

  • Act as directed by the Director, PacketCable Architecture, as staff liaison to CableLabs and external industry initiatives with respect to PacketCable SIP approaches and debate within IP telephony industry. Participate in the dissemination of the strategy, progress, and results of the security architecture to the general public via presentations at industry events.


QUALIFICATIONS

  • Minimum of Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field. Masters degree preferred.

  • Minimum 5 years experience as a system architect or system design engineer with IP telephony architectures and protocols is required. Subject matter expert in SIP architectures and interconnection with VoIP networks, including design and implementation of VoIP/SIP networks, is required.

  • Must have working knowledge of SIP and SIMPLE, including the numerous IETF SIP extensions for event notification and standard event packages, telephony, wireless 3GPP, resource priority, instant messaging, etc. Knowledge of SDP and session negotiation and establishment is also required.

  • This position requires a strong self-starter that is a fast learner in the areas of protocols and network related technologies. Requires strong communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical material in simple terms.

  • Working knowledge of cable systems architecture, operations, and administration is also highly desirable.

  • Must be willing to travel up to 15%.
