SIP Forum Update

The deployment of standard SIP (and its proven interoperability) is the ultimate goal of the SIP forum. The SIP Forum provides a meeting point at which companies can gather and share their analysis on SIP technology and deployment. The panel shares insight into their SIP implementation experiences to date, as well as discussion on their activities for the coming year.



Jay Batson, Founder and CEO, Pingtel

Jay’s background includes early engineering work in large-scale computing and IP networking at BBN, one of the key firms behind building the Internet. Jay was also a well-known networking industry analyst at Forrester Research. Drawing on his BBN experience, Jay was the first industry analyst to examine and predict the explosion of the Internet. He also provided early and important strategic analysis on the internetworking industry, including being the first to predict its consolidation at a time when the industry was growing phenomenally. Jay has also held executive, business development and product management roles at Cayman Systems and ON Technology. Jay has a JD from the University of Denver.



Jim Hourihan, VP, Marketing & Product Mgmt., Acme Packet

With more than 20 years experience in executive management, marketing, business development, and product management, Jim was the VP of marketing for internetworking leader Wellfleet and, after its merger with Synoptics, at Bay Networks (now Nortel) for nearly seven years. During his tenure, revenue grew from $10m to $2b and Wellfleet was recognized as "America's Fastest Growing Company" by Inc. magazine. Jim also served as VP of marketing for Pingtel (the leader in SIP phones) as well as for Bright Tiger (now Macromedia). The co-author of several internetworking guidebooks, Jim has held management positions at Data General and MASSCOMP, holds an AB degree from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Babson College.



Edward Keegan, Director, Lukas Technologies

Co-founder of ETphones.com, Ed was previously Head of Business Development at Indigo Software. There, he was responsible for putting the company on the Voice over IP map, in both Europe and North America, through partnerships and strategic alliances with the world's leading Carriers, Operators, OEMs, and ISVs, and a highly successful corporate and product branding campaign. His 15 years of industry experience includes tenures at Mediatext and with Primarydata, where he was EMEA Director of Sales and Marketing. Ed is Chairman of the SIP Forum's Marketing Working Group.



Erik Lagerway, President and COO, Xten Networks

Erik's history in VOIP goes back more than 7 years. He founded Globaltel [Global Network Telephony Corp.] in 1996 which eventually became Vocalscape Communications Inc. Vocalscape began developing VOIP software in his basement with just one programmer and over the course of 24 months grew the company to employ over 30 employees. Vocalscape received considerable Science Research & Development funds from the British Columbia government for their VOIP & eCRM technology. As the COO and a Co-Founder for Xten, Erik is responsible for the product vision and direction of the company. He is a majority owner in the cash-flow positive private Nevada company whose HQ is in Vancouver, BC Canada.



Ranjith Mukundan, Lead Architect, Wipro Technologies

Ranjith Mukundan has over 8 years of experience in core Telecom Switching R&D, spanning across solutions design and architecture, standardization, network architecture, technology consultancy, technology trends and market analysis. He is, currently working as a Lead Architect in Wipro. He is the author of IETF drafts in areas spanning across SIP, SIGTRAN, MEGACO and MIBs. He is also involved in Parlay 6.0 Standardization activities. He is also the author of papers on Packet Network Solutions, NGN Trends, Kerberos etc. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics & Communication Engineering from BIT, India and MS in Telecom and Software Engineering from IIT, Chicago.



Yi Qin, Customer Support Specialist, SIPquest

Yi Qin is a customer engineering specialist at SIPquest Inc. Yi has held project lead and principle engineer positions at Nortel, SS8 and SIPquest. He has more than 15 years of industrial software engineering experience covering a variety of projects from telecom switches to VoIP applications. Yi holds a PhD in Computer Science from University of Manchester in the United Kingdom.



Fred Robinson, 3Com

Fred Robinson oversees product trials and interoperability testing with North American enterprise voice customers deploying 3Com® VCX™ V7000 IP Telephony Solution. He is also responsible for advancing 3Com’s market position as a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) technology proponent.

With more than 10 years of communications and information technology experience, Robinson has served as lead network architect with Level 3 Communications, where he was responsible for the design and deployment of the first SIP-based termination network in North America.

Robinson earned a bachelor’s degree from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He also received his master’s degree in information and computer science from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana.
