Future of Interconnection

Existing Voice Services are offered on a per minute basis and have cost recovery support systems that enable intercarrier compensation. The Internet on the other hand is a monthly bill that has embedded costs for transit agreements. When VoIP is applied, the question becomes "How are costs accounted for and applied to appropriate sources?" This session will examine this very critical billing concern presented by VoIP technology.
Sam Shiffman, Executive Vice President, PointOne
As Executive Vice President, Mr. Shiffman is Chief Architect and is responsible for managing the design and deployment of the PointOne network. In addition, Mr. Shiffman serves in an instrumental role for developing new product initiatives as well as establishing strategic partnerships. He chairs PointOne's patent committee and is responsible for several patents pending in IP network design. He also served on the Customer Advisory Board of Alcatel, North America. During the late 90's Shiffman also helped design and build one of the first Ethernet based Optical IP networks that provided broadband services to businesses and off-campus students in dormitories and apartments.
Baruch Sterman, CEO, Kayote
Dr. Sterman is the CEO and founder of Kayote Networks, a VoIP company specializing in Session Management layer services and applications. Dr. Sterman became a recognized industry expert in VoIP technologies as Vice President of Research & Development and Chief Scientist at deltathree. There, he was responsible for the design and implementation of the company's real-time billing system and SIP network.
Previously, he worked at AT&T's Bell Labs in the Satellite Communications division. Dr. Sterman holds a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University and a Doctorate in Physics from the Hebrew University.
