Spring 2001 OTN Report

The Open Test Network Pavilion was one of the highlights of the Spring 2001 Voice On the Net conference that was held in Phoenix, AZ on March 21-23.  The Pavilion was a beehive of activity with over 20 Companies coming together to demonstrate interoperability and end-to-end IP communications models.

Test Plans: To view the test plans at Spring VON 2001 in Phoenix, AZ, please click here.

Day One:

End User Device Interoperability – The first four hours of the first day was used to test the interoperability of the end-points when you knew the other end-points IP address.  All tests were conducted using the G.711 Codec.

Registration with a Proxy Server – The second half of first day was spent having the End User Devices register with each of the proxy servers.

While these test were going on, the groups from Mockingbird and Ericsson where busy integrating their products so that we could have connectivity to the outside world via the PRI T1 that was connected to the Ericsson switch.

Day Two:

Calling via Proxy Server – We met in the morning and established our own E.164 compliant dialing plan.  Every End User Device then registered with one of Proxy servers and we began placing calls proxy server routed calls.  Any calls that were outside our Pavilion dialing plan were routed to Mockingbird and out into the PSTN.  This test was repeated for each participating proxy server.

We also set up the proxy servers so that calls to certain East Coast NPA’s were routed through the Nortel SIP/PSTN gateway that is installed in the OTN Lab in Melville.

Multi Proxy Server Calling – We then divided the End User Devices into three groups.  Each group registered with a different Proxy Server.  We then attempted to dial from an End User Device that was part of one group, to an End User Device that was part of a different group.  On the whole, this was not a successful demonstration and it is where we plan to pick up at our next OTN Pavilion event.

Conference Calling - We ended the day with two demonstrations of Large Conference Calls.  On the whole, both the HearMe and Voyant conferencing servers performed well, including the ability to conference H.323 and SIP calls together.  There were some issues with echo cancellation, but that was attributed to a specific End-User device, not the conferencing servers.

Day Three:

This day was dedicated mostly to free form testing.  Some of the SIP based tests that were performed earlier in the week were repeated using the H.323 devices.

The Softswitch vendors showed that they were capable of transcoding between H.323 and SIP devices.
